What is REACH?

REACH Regulation (EC 1907/2006) applies to all chemical substances manufactured or imported into the EU in quantities of one tonne or more per year. It requires companies to identify and manage the risks linked to substances they manufacture and market in the EU.

SVHC: Substances of Very High Concern

A key component of REACH is the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). This list is updated regularly and currently includes over 230 substances. Manufacturers and importers must:

• Notify ECHA if SVHC substances are present in articles above 0.1% by weight
• Provide safety information to customers and consumers upon request
• Obtain authorization before using SVHC substances listed in Annex XIV

REACH compliance testing involves analyzing product materials for the presence of SVHC substances. This typically requires sophisticated analytical techniques such as GC-MS, LC-MS, and ICP-OES. The complexity of the SVHC list, which is updated twice a year, makes ongoing monitoring essential.

REACH vs RoHS

While both regulations address chemical safety, REACH has a broader scope than RoHS. REACH applies to all chemicals in all products, while RoHS specifically restricts certain substances in electrical and electronic equipment. Most manufacturers need to comply with both.
