EMC Testing Fundamentals: Ensuring Electromagnetic Compatibility

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing is a critical requirement for virtually all electronic products. As devices become more complex and operate at higher frequencies, ensuring electromagnetic compatibility is more important than ever.

What is EMC?

EMC refers to the ability of electronic equipment to function satisfactorily in its electromagnetic environment without introducing intolerable disturbances. EMC has two aspects: emissions and immunity.

Types of EMC Testing

  • Radiated Emissions — Measures electromagnetic energy radiated through space
  • Conducted Emissions — Measures electromagnetic energy conducted through cables
  • Radiated Immunity — Tests resistance to external electromagnetic fields
  • Conducted Immunity — Tests resistance to disturbances entering through cables
  • Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) — Simulates static electricity discharges
  • Electrical Fast Transient (EFT) — Tests immunity to fast transient disturbances

Common EMC Standards

Key standards include EN 55032 (emissions), EN 55035 (immunity), FCC Part 15 (US), and CISPR 32/35 (international). Anmai Testing offers both pre-compliance and full compliance EMC testing services.
