Overview

EN 62115 is an electric toy safety standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), fully titled "Electric toys - Safety." The standard addresses safety requirements for toy products that use electricity as a power source (e.g., electric toys, remote-controlled toys, electronic interactive toys), covering electrical safety, mechanical safety, and thermal safety. EN 62115 is one of the harmonized standards under the EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC and complements the EN 71 series. Electric toy products entering the EU market must simultaneously meetEN 71(generaltoysafety)andEN 62115(electric toyssafety)two sets ofstandard.The current versionbeEN 62115:2005+A11:2012+A12:2015+A2:2021.

Applicable Product Scope

Applicable product and service categories

EN 62115 applies to toy products with at least one function dependent on electricity, including but not limited to: electric plush toys (with built-in batteries and motors), remote-controlled toys (RC cars, RC planes, etc.), electronic interactive toys (learning machines, electronic pets, etc.), electric track cars, electric building blocks, toys with LED lighting effects, electronic musical toys, electric water guns, battery-powered toy cars and robots. The standard applies to toys with rated voltages not exceeding24 V DC or equivalent AC power supply. The following products are outside the scope of EN 62115:notincludingelectricalfunction purely mechanicaltoy, intended for adult collectors only electronic models, electronic equipment for competitive sports.

Test Items and Standard Requirements

Technical standards and compliance indicators

EN 62115 core Test Items are as follows
Power Input TestMeasures the input power of the toy under normal operating conditions; deviation must not exceed20 %.
Temperature Rise TestMeasures the temperature of accessible surfaces of the toy under both normal and abnormal operating conditions.
Electric Strength Test at Working VoltageA specified voltage (e.g.,500 V AC), leakage current must not exceed0.5 mA.
Moisture Resistance TestThe toy is placed in a93 %ยฑ3 % RH humidity environment for 4 hours, followed by insulation resistance and electric strength testing. Insulation resistance must be no less than 10 Mohms.
Mechanical Strength TestAfter the toy enclosure withstands impact testing (spring impact hammer 0.7J) and drop testing, no live parts may be exposed.
Construction Safety TestBattery compartment design must prevent incorrect battery installation (polarity marking), live parts must not be accessible, and tools must be required to open the battery compartment (if applicable).
Laser and LED Radiationtoy in Lasers used must not exceed IEC 60825-1 in 1 Class laser Limit(e.g., continuous visible laser output must not exceed0.39 mW).LEDradiation must not exceed IEC 62471inexempt group Limit.

Certification process

Complete steps from application to certification

EN 62115 Certification Process
Step 1Confirm the toy falls within the electric toy category (at least one function depends on electricity).

Test Sample Requirements and Timeline

Technical standards and compliance indicators

EN 62115 electric toy testing requires at least 3 to 5 complete finished toy samples, plus separate battery/charger samples. Samples must be in mass-production condition, identical to the final shipped product. The testing period is typically 10 to 15 working days. Temperature rise testing and electric strength testing require more time (due to waiting for temperature stabilization) and are the main factors affecting the testing timeline. If the product includes remote control functionality (RED Directive), wireless testing may require an additional 2 to 3 weeks.
