Overview

PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) are hydrocarbon compounds containing two or more fused benzene rings in their molecular structure. PAHs are widely found in petroleum, coal tar, asphalt, and other petrochemical products and their derivatives. Due to their carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reproductive toxicity, PAHs are listed as restricted substances under Annex XVII of the EU REACH Regulation (EC 1907/2006). The German GS Mark (Geprufte Sicherheit) imposes the most stringent PAHs restrictions, based on ZEK 01-08 and Af PS GS 2014:01 PAK evaluation standards, specifying limits for specific PAHs in consumer products. The US EPA also lists 16 PAHs as priority pollutants.
02

Applicable Product Scope

Applicable Products and Service Categories

PAHs testing applies to the following products: plastic products (especially black plastic products such as PVC, ABS, rubber, etc.), rubber products (tires, handles, seals, rubber bands, etc.), products containing carbon black or asphalt (such as automotive interior parts, waterproof membranes, etc.), toys and children's products (plastic toys, teethers, etc.), food contact materials (plastic tableware, packaging materials, etc.), electronic and electrical products (wire and cable insulation, plastic housings, etc.), textiles (fabrics with rubber coatings), sports equipment (rubber grips, yoga mats, etc.), and tool handles and grips. PAHs typically originate from carbon black fillers, plasticizers, release agents, or residual impurities in petrochemical raw materials.

Restricted Substances and Limits

Technical Standards and Compliance Indicators

PAHs restriction requirements are categorized by different regulations and standards as follows
I. German Af PS GS 2014:01 PAK Requirements
The 8 REACH-restricted PAHs includeBenzo[a]pyrene, Benzo[e]pyrene, Benz[a]anthracene, Chrysene, Benzo[b]fluoranthene, Benzo[j]fluoranthene, Benzo[k]fluoranthene, Dibenz[a,h]anthracene.
CategoryApplicable ProductsBenzo[a]pyrene LimitTotal 18 PAHs Limit
----------------------------------------------------
Category1Products intended to be placed in the mouth or products for children under 3 years0.2 mg/kg0.2 mg/kg (for any individual PAH)
Category2Products with skin contact exceeding 30 seconds (intended normal use)0.2 mg/kg0.2 mg/kg (for any individual PAH)
Category3Products with skin contact not exceeding 30 seconds or no skin contact1 mg/kg1 mg/kg (for any individual PAH)
SubstanceCAS No.Limit
-------------------
Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP)50-32-81 mg/kg (in toys and children's products; before Dec 27, 2015: 0.1 mg/kg, stricter thereafter)
Total of 8 REACH PAHs - 1 mg/kg (in rubber or plastic components of toys and children's products with direct or indirect long-term/short-term repeated skin or oral contact)
II. EU REACH Regulation Annex XVII, Entry 50 Requirements
18 restricted PAHs include: Naphthalene
Acenaphthylene
Acenaphthene
Fluorene
Phenanthrene
Anthracene
Fluoranthene
Pyrene
Benz[a]anthracene
Chrysene
Benzo[b]fluoranthene
Benzo[k]fluoranthene
Benzo[a]pyrene
Indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene
Dibenz[a,h]anthracene
Benzo[ghi]perylene, etc.
III. US EPA 16 Priority PAHs The US EPA lists 16 PAHs as priority pollutants (including most of the above substances). EPA limit requirements vary depending on specific product regulations.

Test Methods and Standards

Core Test Items and Indicators

PAHs test methods are primarily based on the following standards
Typical Test ProcessSamples are mechanically crushed and then extracted using organic solvents (such as toluene, n-hexane/acetone mixture) via Soxhlet extraction or ultrasonic extraction. The extract is purified and concentrated, then analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) or High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for separation and quantitative analysis.
ISO 18287:2006Determination of PAHs in soil (GC-MS method)
ISO 13877:1998Determination of PAHs in soil (HPLC method)
AfPS GS 2014:01 PAKPAHs test method for consumer products (GS certification standard)
EPA 8270DDetermination of semi-volatile organic compounds (GC-MS method)
EPA 8310Determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HPLC method)
The detection limit is typically 0.05 to0.1 mg/kg.

Certification Process

Complete Steps from Application to Certification

PAHs Compliance Testing Process
Step 1Confirm product category and applicable regulatory requirements (GS certification is the most stringent).
Step 2Sample components that may contain PAHs (plastics, rubber, black-colored materials, etc.).
Step 3Send samples to the laboratory for PAHs testing.
Step 4Issue test report and evaluate against applicable limits.
Step 5If GS certification is required, submit the PAHs report along with other test reports.
Step 6Obtain the GS certification mark or reference PAHs compliance data in the CE Declaration of Conformity.
06

Required Documents and Notes

Required Documents and Materials for Application

To apply for PAHs testing, the following documents are required: product name and model, list of parts to be tested (indicating material, color, location), sample quantity and dimensions, and applicable regulation description. Important Notes: PAHs mainly originate from impurities in petrochemical raw materials, especially carbon black, process oils, and asphalt. Using high-purity carbon black and release agents can effectively reduce PAHs content. PAHs testing is destructive and samples cannot be returned. GS certification PAHs requirements are stricter than REACH; if GS certification is needed, testing should follow GS standards. Different laboratories may have different detection limits for PAHs testing; it is recommended to use an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory. PAHs content in products may vary between raw material batches; it is recommended to establish a supplier material control system.
